Tesla Model Y towbar fitting: cost, towing capacity and range impact
Reviewed by an experienced Leicester towbar fitter Last updated
The Model Y tows up to 1,600kg braked, enough for a small caravan, a camping trailer or any bike rack, but it sits firmly in specialist territory for fitting. Expect to pay £900 to £1,300 for an EV-approved detachable towbar with dedicated electrics, and plan for a real hit to range when towing.

How much can a Tesla Model Y tow?
UK Model Ys are rated at 1,600kg braked with an approved towbar, with a noseweight limit around 100kg, which also makes it a strong platform for carrying two or three e-bikes on a towbar-mounted rack. Towing was designed in from the factory (Trailer Mode), so a properly fitted towbar does not compromise the car.
| Figure | Tesla Model Y |
|---|---|
| Braked towing capacity | 1,600kg |
| Noseweight limit | around 100kg |
| Range impact (caravan/loaded trailer) | 30 – 50% reduction |
| Range impact (bike rack) | 10 – 15% reduction |
Why EV fitting is different
Three things make the Model Y a specialist job:
- Battery clearance: the high-voltage battery spans the floor, so the towbar must be the EV-approved design for the car and fitted without disturbing battery protection
- Electronics: the wiring must integrate with the car so Trailer Mode engages, adjusting stability control and handling the rear parking sensors
- Warranty: an approved towbar and kit, properly installed, keeps you on the right side of Tesla's warranty terms
Fitter's tip
Only use a fitter with EV experience. Our guide to electric car towbar fitting covers what to look for.
What about range?
Plan for a 30 to 50% range reduction when towing a caravan or loaded trailer, and around 10 to 15% with a bike rack. Route planning around charging stops matters more than the headline range figure, and most public charging bays are not laid out for a car with a trailer, so plan where you will unhitch.
What does it cost?
Budget £900 to £1,300 fitted for an EV-approved detachable towbar with dedicated electrics. That is well above a typical SUV because the approved hardware costs more and the fitting takes longer. Yes, up to 1,600kg braked, which covers many small and mid-size single-axle caravans. Check the caravan's MTPLM and allow for the 30 to 50% range reduction when planning trips.
Typically £900 to £1,300 for an EV-approved detachable towbar with dedicated electrics, fitted by an EV-experienced installer.
Not if an approved towbar and wiring kit are professionally fitted. Unapproved hardware or DIY wiring is where warranty problems start.
