VW Tiguan towbar fitting: cost, towing capacity and coding
Reviewed by an experienced Leicester towbar fitter Last updated
The Tiguan is one of the strongest tow cars in its class, and the right spec will pull a large twin-axle caravan with ease. Expect to pay £550 to £750 for a detachable towbar with dedicated 13-pin electrics and the software coding that VW models require. The coding is the part cheap quotes tend to leave out, so it is worth understanding.

How much can a VW Tiguan tow?
Exact limits depend on engine, gearbox and drivetrain, so check the VIN plate or handbook for your car.
| Engine | Approx. braked towing capacity |
|---|---|
| 2.0 TDI 4Motion (strongest) | up to 2,500kg |
| Most petrol and diesel models | 1,800 – 2,200kg |
| Tiguan eHybrid | 1,600 – 1,800kg |
Which towbar suits a Tiguan?
The detachable swan neck is by far the most popular fit, working cleanly with the Tiguan's parking sensors and keeping the rear tidy. A fixed towbar is worth considering if the car tows every week. Some Tiguans came with factory towbar preparation, which can reduce fitting time and cost, and your fitter can check this from the registration.
Electrics and coding, the important bit
VW Group cars need software coding after the towbar is fitted. Coding activates trailer stability control, correct bulb-failure monitoring, and Trailer Assist on cars that have it. A dedicated wiring kit is essential here, as a universal kit on a Tiguan causes electrical gremlins and skips the safety integration entirely.
Fitter's tip
Make sure any quote explicitly includes coding. Quotes that look cheap often exclude the coding step.
What does it cost?
Budget £550 to £750 fitted, including dedicated 13-pin electrics and coding. Our towbar fitting cost guide explains what to check, and you can request quotes from Leicester towbar fitters here, several of whom code VW Group vehicles in-house.
Prices and figures correct as of August 2026. Always confirm your car's limit on the VIN plate and get a quote against your registration.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Without coding the car does not know a trailer is attached, so stability control, sensor behaviour and Trailer Assist will not work as designed. It adds £40 to £100 if not already included in the quote.
Typically £550 to £750 for a detachable towbar with dedicated 13-pin electrics and coding included.
The 4Motion diesels can. With up to 2,500kg of braked capacity they handle most twin-axle caravans, while front-wheel-drive petrol models are better matched to single-axle vans.
