Detachable Towbars
Detachable towbars offer the best of both worlds - full towing capability when needed, with a clean rear end when not. The towball mechanism can be easily removed and stored in your boot. Compare with fixed towbars for a permanent option.
How Detachable Towbars Work
A detachable towbar consists of:
- Fixed mounting bracket: Permanently attached to vehicle (hidden behind bumper)
- Removable neck and ball: Clicks or bolts into the bracket
- Locking mechanism: Secures the neck in place, often key-operated
Types of Detachable Systems
Vertical Detachable
The neck inserts vertically into the bracket.
- Most common type
- Simple attachment/removal
- Secure locking mechanism
Horizontal Detachable
The neck slides horizontally into the bracket.
- Lower profile when fitted
- Often used on premium vehicles
- May be easier to attach in tight spaces
Advantages of Detachable Towbars
- Clean appearance: Nothing visible when not towing
- Parking sensors: Less interference when removed
- Security: Prevents theft of bike racks etc.
- Access: Easier boot loading without towball in the way
Considerations
- Higher cost than fixed towbars
- Need to remember to bring the neck when towing
- Storage space required for the neck
- Attachment mechanism requires occasional maintenance
Best For
- Occasional towers
- Those who prefer a clean rear appearance
- Vehicles with parking sensors
- Premium/prestige vehicles
