Detachable Towbars

Detachable towbars offer the best of both worlds - full towing capability when needed, with a clean rear end when not. The towball mechanism can be easily removed and stored in your boot. Compare with fixed towbars for a permanent option.

How Detachable Towbars Work

A detachable towbar consists of:

  • Fixed mounting bracket: Permanently attached to vehicle (hidden behind bumper)
  • Removable neck and ball: Clicks or bolts into the bracket
  • Locking mechanism: Secures the neck in place, often key-operated

Types of Detachable Systems

Vertical Detachable

The neck inserts vertically into the bracket.

  • Most common type
  • Simple attachment/removal
  • Secure locking mechanism

Horizontal Detachable

The neck slides horizontally into the bracket.

  • Lower profile when fitted
  • Often used on premium vehicles
  • May be easier to attach in tight spaces

Advantages of Detachable Towbars

  • Clean appearance: Nothing visible when not towing
  • Parking sensors: Less interference when removed
  • Security: Prevents theft of bike racks etc.
  • Access: Easier boot loading without towball in the way

Considerations

  • Higher cost than fixed towbars
  • Need to remember to bring the neck when towing
  • Storage space required for the neck
  • Attachment mechanism requires occasional maintenance

Best For

  • Occasional towers
  • Those who prefer a clean rear appearance
  • Vehicles with parking sensors
  • Premium/prestige vehicles
